Mattis was born to Ifenn of Synergetics, and Quee of Statics. His father was a noted specialist on the fast emerging field of Mist Science, and was one of several researchers that developed the Ifenn-Louva-Jiff Constant, which describes the relationship between Mist Temporal Displacement, and Energy. Quee served as a Deputy Councilor on the Arcane Council, and was known for her work with various legislation regarding Apprentice Regulation laws.
His parents were both Elementalists; Ifenn an accomplished Hydromancer applier, while Quee a noted Aeromancer controller. As such, Mattis received a very early tutelage in the Arcane Arts, earning a higher than average knack for Aeromancy and Hydromancy.
At the age of five, Mattis would receive his first pair of training daggers.
Mattis attended the Hinterlands Precollege at Splorg Metamystics, where he excelled in his studies, and developed the Geomystical Mist Transducer, a subroutine protocol that worked to preemptively prepare Geomystical Generators for sudden energy drops and spikes, by detecting said drops and spikes before they occur through the resonance said events cause in the Mist.
This project earned him a spot in the College of Synergetics, where he took an interest in the discipline of Chaos Energy.
Crystal Twinning occurs when the seed of crystal growth is replicated along an axis of the same crystal. Considered a deterministic process, two crystals given similar seeds will grow to similar crystals, given that they are exposed similar conditions (for variables such as atmospheric magic, heat, wind) for duration of time.
Though many crystals display the twinning effect, Mattis' experiment and research focused on the phenomena of Crystal Twinning via remote, unconnected crystals.
To understand the behavior of crystal twinning when removed from a time vector, Mattis reconfigured a portal to portal to its own position. Thereby, the Crystals are neither here nor there; creating an infinite loop, whereby the Crystals are "removed" from the four dimensions (i.e., the three positional vectors, and the time vector)
Observing for the crystal decay, plotted against portal transition periods (which approaches infinity, due to the portal's same-spot configuration), Mattis concluded from the experiments that the twinning crystal's behavior indicated that
- Remote Crystal Twinning Occurs regardless of relativity to time and space vectors,
- Remote Crystal Twinning implies that Crystal Twinning Occurs at an Absolute Reference Point.
Mattis' theory of Absolute Twinning postulates that crystals that demonstrate remote twinning provide for a sense of absolute universal reference. In addition, because Crystals that demonstrate remote twinning are unaffected by space and time (i.e., when one undergoes Chaos Stirs, the other follows at the same time, regardless of distance), it is further implied that the ability to simultaneously replicate the conditions of the other would point to a chain reaction of Submistical Particle replication.
Though the conclusions of the experiment remain controversial, with particular dissent from Indeterministic Theoretical Mistycists, the observance of Crystal Decay, utilizing the gradient of the curve, are one of a variety of methods that Gate Attunement Ideal verification is done.
Mattis was offered employment at the Thaumanova Initialization Krewe, Rana Assorted Energy Solutions, and various others. Indecision plagued Mattis in his final months of college.
Finally, Mattis opted to join Rana Assorted Energy, which had sweetened their offer with a promise to bankroll an extension on one of Mattis' patents.
Mattis' first project for Rana Assorted Energy Solutions involved the stabilization of isotopic remote twinning crystals, via deterministic theory. His solution would be a special electrolysis treated Alchemical solution, which would slow down crystal decay.
It would be dubbed "Elixir 5AB-RANA-CRYST"
-- Elixir 5AB-RANA-CRYST Solution
The solution would be invaluable during the creation of the Thaumanova Reactor, preceding the development of the sure-stabilizer Elixir later on in 1310 by Chaos Krewe.
During the summer of, Mattis was commissioned to create
Mattis' enlistment in the Peacemakers shocked many. Mattis acquaintances and associates were incredibly confounded by the decision, and his first day in the Peacemaker Headquarters was marked by countless visits by incredulous peers, who came to beg him to reconsider.
Mattis would explain to them that his motivation for enlisting was out of patriotism. He would rise through the ranks quickly, being selectively promoted repeatedly by his superiors. Mattis' appointment to the Chief rank came without much contentiousness; indeed, it came with no "nays".
Upon Mattis' appointment to the Chief rank, he met an Arcane Eye analyst by the name of Eidii. Eidii was an accomplished Synergetics theoretician herself, and it was not long before Mattis invited the attractive analyst to a Symposium held by his former professor, and life long mentor, Vopp.
The two became engaged not long after, signing the contract within six months of meeting.
The developments in Brisban radically transformed the Peacemakers operational requirements, and Mattis was an early advocate of defying Sylvari and Krytan borders, to hunt down and exterminate the growing influence of the criminal entities of the aforementioned civilizations in the Maguuma region.
Meanwhile, reports of heinous experimentation conducted by the "Inquest" corporate Krewe tarnished domestic policing, though Mattis remained generally involved in that particular issue.
Eventually, reports of insurgents in Brisban came, and it would not be long before Rata Sum mobilized a swift military response.
Talks of Rata Sum's armed response to Brisban initially took much deliberation and planning, and it was determined that the operation would be a slow, two pronged, two week maneuver, which involved a pincer movement around Skrittsburgh.
However, Rata Sum officials were unable to locate the Caledon Topographical Krewe in the Brisban Evacuation area; within a matter of days, Arcane Eye intelligence discerned that four members of the Caledon Topographical Krewe had been killed in East Skrittsburgh by Courtier forces, and that the two remaining Krewe members were in Nightmare Court captivity.
Public outcry called for a step up in the intervention, and Operation Jungle Thunder commenced a week ahead of plan.
Peacemaker Mattis, commanding officer of the 120th Golemized Cavalry, was tasked with securing the Nightmare Court camp at Joy's End, one of the suspected locations of the Topographical Krewe.
Fighting was fiercest, as Peacemaker Forces engaged the Courtier insurgents. Utilizing clever guerrilla tactics, the element of surprise, and stealth, Peacemaker forces were initially decimated by Courtier resistance.
However, the advent of Golem heavy cavalry in the open plains of Southeast Skrittsburgh, along with superior firepower and communications, lead to a routing of Courtier forces just west of the Joy's End caverns.
Mattis and the 120th Golemized Cavalry managed to secure a forward operating base there, and survey of the well defended courtier position at Joy's End confirmed that Joy's End was indeed the location where the Topographical Krewe were being held captive, along with what appeared to be about a dozen dreamers.
The Nightmare insurgents began entrenching themselves in the strategically favorable rocky incline of Joy's End, which would undermine the Golem Cavalry's speed and direct weaponry -- realizing this, the Courtiers further held back the Peacemakers from an assault, by threatening to kill the Topography Krewe, if an attack were to commence.
An uneasy quiet fell upon the battle lines at Joy's End, though minor skirmishes between the Peacemaker lines, and the Courtier positions, began. Consultation with Rata Sum was initially unproductive; but on the third day, Mattis made a request to acquisition an experiment herbicide, and defoliant, called "Elixir Orange"
Elixir Orange was initially designed to handle unwanted vegetation in Metrica's Luminates construction site. However, Mattis speculated that the gas had negative effects on the Sylvari.
Mattis modified a Napalm Golem to instead take Elixir Orange, and propelled it straight to the holding area of the Courtier Camp -- the gas, anywhere from lethal to irritating for Sylvaris, but non-lethal to Asura, was sent to create a demarcation area around the Courtier holding area, killing any Courtiers near the cells, and preventing others from approaching; giving them just enough time to secure the camp.
The plan's implementation however became delayed by concerns for the possibility of dreamer captives, which initial surveying had implied.
Mattis however believe these concerns were unwarranted; and proceeded anyways.
The deployment of the gas immediately cleared any Courtiers from the two Asura captives -- and Mattis' Peacemakers rushed in, securing the area, to the cover of Elixir Orange.
The operation was a resounding success, and the two Asura captives were rescued without harm.
The corpses of the dreamer captives were chalked up as the bodies of courtiers.
Being prominent official of Rata Sum, an accomplished Elementalist tactician, and a contributing Synergetics academic, Mattis has taken views in a wide array of mutuallly exclusive fields, such as political science, geopolitics, intelligent elementalism, arcane energy, and mist causality, Mattis is an advocate of Counter Terrorism over Counter Insurgency tactics in the Brisban Area.
A longstanding debate in the Rata Sum defense circles, Mattis rejects the value of population centric counter-insurgency, a policy which aims for a macro approach to enemy combatants.
In particular, Mattis believes that the problems of the Brisban Frontier should focus upon the destruction of high value targets; this motivation is reasoned by the argument that the various illegal combatants in the Brisban area are ran in a "trickle down" fashion, and that the securing of the populace, like the Hylek, the Skritt, or the various Sylvari Dreamers, represent a grandiose waste of time, as these entities are either incapable of providing much value when allied, or are already too skewed towards rejecting enemy combatants anyways, and require no further sway.
To this effect, Mattis remains a large advocate of prioritizing the elimination of anti-Rata Sum high value targets like Faolain, Apophan, and countless other figures, over populace control.
Mattis is an extremely accomplished Elementalist, having been granted the distinction of "Grandmaster Elementalist" by the Arcane Institute accreditation system. His early tutelage in the elementalist arts, which was further refined by his Peacemaker training and experience, has made him a Grandmaster Aeromancer and Hydromancer, and though he is less familiar with the other two elements, he nevertheless has obtained qualifications enough to earn the lower distinction of "Master Pyromancer" and "Master Geomancer".
However, Mattis disregards the advantage of raw arcane energy, and emphasizes application of intelligent elementalism, which requires knowledge of a variety of differing arts, such as Alchemy, Submistical Theory, and Eternal Alchemy dsigns.
Particularly well versed in Aeromancy and Hydromancy, Mattis specializes in the emerging field of Aerohydromatics, an elementalist discipline emerging from the convergence of Aeromancy and Hydromancy principles -- in particular, around the various phenomena of air and water, such as "Electrolysis", which is a process that involves the driving of typicaly non-spontaneously reactive Elixir solutions (such as water), and causing them to react.
With a firm grasp of Aeromancy, Hydromancy, and the specific phenomena (Electrolysis, Ionization), Mattis is extremely well versed in manipulating submistical particles via elementalism. This field retains special practical applications, such as the removal of vapors from the air, or even, the separation of air submistical properties itself, the separation of raw metals, galvanization of Orichalcum, breathing underwater, and electroplating capabilities -- applications which have garnered him many advantages over his numerous opponents.
Mattis is fully capable of utilizing the dagger, the focus, the scepter, and the staff as magical bridges. Like most Synergetics graduates, Mattis holds a profound grasp of the Eternal Alchemy. He is an advocate of Absolute Deterministic Theory.
An Absolute Determinist believes that the flows and outcomes of events are pre-determined, through prior developments, across all levels of Mist Causality.
This scientific philosophy therefore believes that the outcome of events are merely the resultant of a mixture of prerequisite variables, and hence, the outcome of everything before and after is viewed as being set. Therefore, advocates of Absolute Determinism reject the concept of randomness, (i.e., defined as a variable whose outcome is not a function of preexisting variables).
An often quoted example of absolute determinism is the dice roll.
A dice is often described as a random outcome; however, absolute determinists argue that the dice roll, like all outcomes, is merely the product of a variety of pre-existing conditions, factors, and variables.
Example #1, located on the bottom, describes some potential variable candidates; for example, the outcome of the dice is merely a product of wind speed, wrist angle, exact gravitational pull, and even the half-life decay of the material that makes the dice.
In Chaos Adopted Power Arrays: Version II, Chaper IV: Determinism, Mattis wrote:
"Absolute Determinism is the understanding that all cogs of the Eternal Alchemy behave in non-randomized ways. It is the very basis of modern Mist Causality, and is key to understanding the behavior of Submistical Particles.
Take for example, the Roasted Moa dish that I had for dinner. I do not know who made it with absolute certainty, where it came from, how it was cooked, or when it was defrosted.
All I know is that there is a Roasted Moa dish on my dinner table.
Theoretically, it could have been made by my Aunt; by my wife, by my progeny. Theoretically, it could have been cooked by the Queen of Kryta.
The roasted moa may have been cooked via pyromantic applications; alchemical fires, or even aeromancy waves. It may have been made in the Shiverpeaks, and arrived here via gate.
Yet, it would be erroneous to say, that because the Roasted Moa is here, the creation of the roasted Moa came from my Aunt who aeromanced it, simultaneously, another Moa was alchemically cooked by the Queen of Kryta, and my wife and progeny had aeromanced it! -- and all these event paths led to merely one Moa! The prelude to an event's outcome cannot be multiple things; it is one, single path.
And so, the Determinist argues that, yes, while we are not aware who exactly made the Moa -- whether it be the Queen of Kryta, Mattis' aunt, or his wife -- the answer to this can only be one path, not multiple mutually exclusive ones."
